ADB and the Japanese government are backing AM Green's renewable ammonia project in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, with a $100 million loan from LEAP-2. The plant will convert a former gas based ammonia and urea complex into a green ammonia facility with a target of 1.1 million tons per year. It is the first investment under the ACCEL initiative, which links energy security to clean energy infrastructure. AM Green will build the facility in two phases, each with a 547.5 kilotonne ammonia train. Phase 1 covers the first train and shared utilities, while Phase 2 depends on securing more long-term offtake agreements. If completed, the project would cut emissions from ammonia production and give India a foothold in the export market for lower-carbon industrial feedstocks.

Good to see development banks putting money into green ammonia at this scale. 1.1 million tons a year is real tonnage, not a pilot. The two phase approach makes sense too, they can build the first train and wait for offtake before committing to the second.

Main question for me is where the renewable power comes from and how it gets to Kakinada. Green ammonia needs dedicated supply or firm PPAs, plus a grid connection for electrolysers. The article says renewable energy but not the actual source or transmission plan. That detail decides whether this stays on schedule.

ACCEL being the first investment here matters more than the loan size. It sets a template for how Japan and ADB define energy security. Hopefully the carbon accounting for this ammonia is clear, electrolyser input, fugitive emissions, and all. Otherwise export buyers will push back on the green label.

Converting a former gas based ammonia site is a nice angle. You keep the existing industrial infrastructure and avoid building a new industrial zone from scratch. The $100 million from LEAP-2 covers part of it, but the offtake hurdle for phase 2 is the real bottleneck.
