Adani's Ambuja Cements partners with UK's Leilac for low-carbon cement project in Gujarat

Ambuja Cements has partnered with UK-based clean tech firm Leilac to build a commercial-scale low-carbon cement production line at its Sanghi plant in Kutch, Gujarat. The project aims to test Leilac's carbon capture and hybrid electric heating technology, which could cut coal use to zero and capture process CO2 emissions. If successful, the setup could be scaled 7 to 8 times to capture over one million tonnes of CO2 annually. The partnership supports Ambuja's SBTi-validated net zero target for 2050 and its broader push to electrify cement manufacturing using renewable energy, backed by nearly 1 GW of captive green power. The companies say the collaboration could improve the economics of carbon capture and create a replicable model for the global cement industry, which is a major source of industrial emissions. For carbon credit and climate watchers, this is a concrete industrial decarbonization project with clear scale-up potential.
