Adani Power and Druk Green Power Partner on 770 MW Chamkharchhu-I Hydropower Project in Bhutan
ianslive.inAdani Power and Druk Green Power have signed an agreement to build the 770 MW Chamkharchhu-I hydropower project in Bhutan's Zhemgang District. It is the second joint hydro venture between the two firms, following the 570 MW Wangchhu deal from September 2025, and sits under a broader 5,000 MW hydropower MoU signed in May 2025. The project will operate under a build-own-operate-transfer model with a 49:51 equity split between Adani Power and DGPC, and a 30-year concession after commissioning. Construction is expected to start in the first half of 2027, with commissioning targeted six years later. The power will cover Bhutan's winter peak demand and allow surplus electricity exports to India in summer. This deal shows how cross-border hydropower can help both countries shift away from fossil generation, but the real test is execution. Delivering the project on schedule and building the transmission links to actually move the power will determine whether it works as advertised.
