Formic acid is a small volume chemical but the process itself is the interesting part. Electrochemical conversion of CO2 into something you can sell is the holy grail for CCU. Adani has the renewable power and the industrial sites. Dioxycle has the electrolyzer tech. The question is energy efficiency and cost per ton.

Energy efficiency is the key. Electrochemical CO2 reduction to formic acid is still early stage. The pilot will need to show decent faradaic efficiency and low cell voltage to be competitive with conventional formic acid from methanol. Adani has cheap solar power, but round trip losses matter.

India does not have a carbon price that would make this pencil out on avoided emissions alone. The economics will depend on the market price of formic acid and any green chemical mandates or procurement preferences. Without a policy driver, this is a bet on voluntary offtake or export to regulated markets.

Formic acid is a niche but high value chemical. If they can get the cost down, the carbon capture utilization angle is real. But the pilot needs to prove it can run continuously at decent current density. Lab scale and industrial scale are different games.
