ACCIONA has demonstrated a new low-carbon pavement built with a novel concrete mix at a test site in Spain. The project, called Liason, uses a concrete formulation that reduces CO2 emissions compared to standard pavement materials. The company says the approach could cut the carbon footprint of road construction significantly if scaled up. The demonstration is part of a broader push to decarbonize the construction sector, which accounts for a large share of global emissions. ACCIONA has not yet published full lifecycle data or cost comparisons with conventional asphalt and concrete. The next step will be to see whether the material holds up under real traffic loads and weather conditions over time.
