ABS Grants Approval to SOFC Power System for FPSOs, Targeting 70% Electrical Efficiency
imarinenews.comABS has granted New Technology Qualification approval to MODEC and Eld Energy for a solid oxide fuel cell power system designed for FPSOs. The SOFC module is meant to run on associated gas produced at the facility and targets up to 70 percent electrical efficiency, with future integration with carbon capture equipment. It has passed the technology feasibility and concept verification stages, moving it closer to offshore use. A 40 kW pilot and offshore trial on an FPSO is planned next, testing the system under real marine and production conditions. Results will inform the next phases, including a 120 kW module and eventually a multi-megawatt full-scale system. If the efficiency and reliability claims hold up, SOFCs could meaningfully reduce fuel use and CO2 emissions from FPSO power generation.
