Abertay University and RADIX develop carbon calculator for screw pile foundations
scottishconstructionnow.comAbertay University and Dundee-based foundation company RADIX have developed a carbon calculator to measure the whole-life embodied carbon of screw pile and concrete foundation systems. The tool was built by MSc Geotechnical Engineering student Emir Tashbaev and accounts for material production, transportation, installation, and end-of-life impacts. It was tested on a battery energy storage project in North Yorkshire. Early results indicate RADIX screw pile foundations have a lower overall carbon impact than equivalent concrete foundations. The company, founded in 2019, plans to use the calculator to compare its systems against conventional options on future projects. Abertay and RADIX are also exploring a Knowledge Transfer Partnership to extend the collaboration.
