The City of Abbotsford has finished the Heat Recovery and Optimization (HeRO) project at its recreation centre. The system captures waste heat from the arena ice plant to warm the pool and community spaces, reducing the facility's energy use by 40 percent and cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 70 percent. Funded by federal and provincial grants totaling over 8 million dollars, the retrofit modernizes the building's HVAC operations. The project also included accessibility upgrades, such as new wheelchair pool lifts and an updated elevator, to improve facility access.
