65 CO2 ships and 33 ports needed by 2050 for carbon capture targets, says Xodus forecast

A new forecast from energy consultancy Xodus says Europe will need around 65 dedicated CO2 carriers and infrastructure at 33 ports by 2050 to meet carbon capture and storage targets. The study, commissioned by the Net Zero Technology Centre, predicts captured emissions across Europe will grow from 70 million tonnes per annum in 2030 to 320 million tonnes per annum by 2050. While pipelines will eventually carry over 75% of captured CO2, ships will play a key role early on. The shipping share of transport is expected to drop from 48% to 24% by 2050, but the volume carried by ship will more than double to 79 million tonnes per annum as overall capture scales up. The analysis screened over 800 European ports and identified up to 60 well positioned to route emissions to offshore geological storage.
