The credit value depends on the carbon intensity (CI) of the finished biofuel, which gives processors an incentive to seek feedstock with a lower documented carbon footprint. The USDA Feedstock Carbon Intensity Calculator currently recognizes six practices that can lower CI: no-till, reduced till, cover crops, nitrification inhibitors, split in-season fertilizer for corn and sorghum, and spring-only fertilizer for corn. Location matters significantly, as the same practice can produce different CI reductions depending on the county. The calculator focuses on emissions per bushel and does not separately model yield gains or losses. That means it does not reward a producer for higher yields from better management, nor does it penalize if a practice causes a yield penalty. Producers using the tool need to retain documentation of inputs and outputs along with practice-specific records. The current version is a beta for testing and feedback, so numbers are preliminary. For Illinois corn, cover crops show larger estimated CI reductions than no-till or split nitrogen, with reductions ranging from 1,174 to 3,137 g CO2e per bushel depending on the county.
