41% of Onsite Data Centers Expected to Integrate CCUS by 2035, Driven by AI Growth and Grid Limits
carbonherald.comA new report from Bloom Energy forecasts that 41% of onsite-powered data centers will incorporate carbon capture, utilization, and storage by 2035. The shift is driven by surging electricity demand from AI infrastructure, which is projected to more than double US data center power needs by 2030. With grid capacity strained, 61% of developers say they will deploy onsite generation rather than relocate, pushing CCUS from a niche option to a core design requirement. This trend creates tension between speed-to-market and net-zero commitments. As more data centers go off-grid to avoid interconnection delays, they face tougher compliance and emissions challenges. Pairing independent power with scalable carbon capture is becoming a dual strategy for operators who need to scale fast without blowing past climate targets. The report surveyed 156 industry decision makers across hyperscalers, colocation providers, and chip developers.
