390MW French e-SAF project secures RFNBO-certified grid power from EDF for green hydrogen production

German developer Hy2gen has signed a 10-year power agreement with EDF to supply its 390MW H4 Marseille Fos e-SAF project in southern France with a low-carbon electricity mix of renewable and nuclear power, starting in 2032. The deal allows the project to claim RFNBO compliance under EU rules, since the French grid already meets the 18g per megajoule emission intensity threshold. Hy2gen says this brings the 75,000-tonne facility closer to a final investment decision by 2028. The project aims to supply sustainable aviation fuel under the ReFuelEU mandate, which requires a 10% share of e-SAF in aviation fuels by 2040. The power sourcing deal comes as the EU considers relaxing RFNBO additionality rules, which developers say add cost and delay. Proposed changes include extending transition periods and easing emission intensity requirements. The European Commission is expected to propose revisions in August. Hy2gen is also advancing its 100MW Albatros green hydrogen plant in Denmark, which secured EUR 140 million in subsidies from the third European Hydrogen Bank auction. The company is targeting a 2028 groundbreaking for that project. Together, these developments show how developers are navigating RFNBO rules and subsidy mechanisms to scale green hydrogen and e-fuel production in Europe.
