24,168 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ship OOCL Grace starts sea trials in Jiangsu
chinadaily.com.cnThe OOCL Grace, a 24,168 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ship, has left its berth in Nantong, Jiangsu province, for sea trials. It is the second vessel of this type built by Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering for Orient Overseas Container Line, following the lead ship OOCL Wisdom. Methanol dual-fuel propulsion lets the ship run on either methanol or conventional bunker fuel. That flexibility matters on long ocean routes, but the emissions outcome depends on which fuel is actually in the tank. Green methanol, made from biomass or renewable hydrogen plus captured CO2, is the low-carbon case. Fossil methanol or heavy fuel oil does not deliver the same benefit. The manufacturer points to upgrades in outfitting, intelligent energy regulation, and navigation comfort. The real test is whether the fuel system and energy controls hold up under high-intensity, long-voyage conditions. Sea trial results should give a clearer picture of how this class of ship performs in service.
