2026 World Cup Carbon Footprint: 7.8 Million Tons from Spectator Air Travel

International visitors, who make up only 35% of attendees, will generate 74% of travel-related emissions. The emissions profile differs sharply from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. While the 2026 tournament will use existing stadiums and produce lower infrastructure and accommodation emissions, these savings are overwhelmed by transportation. The 7.8 MtCO2e estimate is more than double the 3.7 MtCO2e projection in FIFA's original 2018 bid, raising questions about the organization's climate commitments under the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework. FIFA's sustainability strategy does not set a specific emissions cap for the tournament or directly address spectator travel.
