Huawei and partners hosted the 2026 Global Low-Carbon Industry Forum in Shenzhen, where the focus was on using grid-forming storage and AI to keep power systems stable as solar and wind penetration grows. Speakers covered Europe's first megawatt-level grid-forming tests, Germany's move to auction grid-forming capability, and the MTerra Solar project in the Philippines, a 3.5 GW PV and 4.5 GWh storage build that has started commercial operation. Two themes stand out. Grid-forming capability is shifting from a technical feature to a market service in some regions, which gives storage projects new revenue streams. And large PV plus storage is being presented as a dependable source of firm power, not just cheap energy. The forum also tied the push to the roughly 700 million people without electricity, arguing that grid-forming and AI can lower costs and improve reliability in weak grids.
