2026 Global Carbon Neutrality Report launched at Tsinghua: 198 countries assessed on transition drivers and constraints
manilatimes.netTsinghua University released the 2026 Global Carbon Neutrality Annual Progress Report at a September 22 forum in Beijing. The report uses more than 200 indicators to assess progress across 198 countries and regions, looking at what is speeding up the low-carbon transition and what is holding it back. It marks the fifth anniversary of Tsinghua's Institute for Carbon Neutrality and the start of China's 15th Five-Year Plan period. The findings show wind, solar, storage, and electric vehicles are scaling quickly, but system-level bottlenecks remain. Limited grid integration capacity, high financing costs, gaps in market mechanisms, and barriers to international technology diffusion are slowing deployment. Clean hydrogen and carbon capture still face weak demand, missing infrastructure, and unclear business models. Developing economies are especially constrained by costly capital, trade barriers, and limited capacity to absorb new green technologies. The report is available through Tsinghua's Global Carbon Neutrality Progress Tracker at cntracker.tsinghua.edu.cn.
