£200m Parc Adfer carbon capture plant approved, but will cut National Grid exports by over half
leaderlive.co.ukFlintshire Council approved a £200m carbon capture facility at the Parc Adfer energy-from-waste plant. The plant currently exports 21 MW to the grid, but the capture system will use most of that power, leaving only 7.9 MW for export. The facility aims to capture 95% of carbon emissions and send them to the Hynet pipeline for permanent storage. Councillors questioned the real-world capture rate, citing IEEFA and EU reports that similar plants achieve around 50%. The developer, Enfinium, says they tested a pilot and are confident in the 95% target, which will be monitored by Natural Resources Wales. The plant treats 232,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste annually. The approval came after a delay to consult neighboring English authorities. The trade-off between carbon capture and grid exports is a key issue for energy policy, as such facilities may reduce available power while helping meet decarbonization goals.
