2,550 Punjab and Haryana Farmers Earn ₹2.9 Crore in India's First Soil Carbon Credit Payout
hindustantimes.comMore than 2,500 farmers in Punjab and Haryana received nearly ₹2.9 crore in the first Indian soil carbon credit issuance. The program, run by Grow Indigo with ICAR guidance, covered about 30,000 acres and issued over 50,000 credits. Farmers were paid between ₹3,000 and ₹15,000 each, with payments made upfront from the company's funds before credit sales. The credits came from regenerative practices like direct-seeded rice and improved crop residue management, which reduce water use and stubble burning. The program estimates savings of 45 billion liters of water and over 200,000 tonnes of residue kept out of fires. Verification spanned multiple years, and farmers who joined after 2022 will be in the next payment cycle. The model gives smallholders an income stream for practices with environmental co-benefits. It will be worth watching whether the approach scales to other states and how the credit standard holds up over time.
