2,500 Punjab and Haryana Farmers Receive First Carbon Credit Payouts for Climate-Smart Rice Farming
odishabytes.comMore than 2,500 smallholder paddy farmers in Punjab and Haryana are receiving their first carbon credit payments for climate-smart farming practices. The payouts, mostly between ₹3,000 and ₹15,000 per farmer, cover work done between 2019 and 2022 on about 30,000 acres. Grow Indigo, the program operator, issued the credits under Verra's Verified Carbon Standard and is funding the initial transfers itself while the credits are sold to buyers in hard-to-abate sectors. Farmers earned credits by using direct seeded rice instead of flooded transplanting and by managing crop residue without burning. These practices cut methane and nitrous oxide emissions, build soil carbon, and save an estimated 1.4 million litres of water per hectare. The program also helps reduce the seasonal stubble burning that drives PM2.5 pollution across northern India. Grow Indigo says it is working with more than 100,000 farmers and aims to generate one million credits per year by 2027.
