Residents in Makilala, Cotabato turned over 12 wild animals to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, including two Philippine palm civets, two Philippine ducks, four white-eared brown doves, three spotted doves, and a juvenile white-breasted waterhen. DENR personnel brought them to the Kidapawan City Veterinary Office, where all were certified fit for release. Eight birds were released immediately, while the ducks and civets stayed at a temporary wildlife rescue center for observation before returning to their habitat. The surrenders followed Republic Act No. 9147, the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act, which requires proper handling of rescued or encountered wildlife. The case shows how community reporting and local enforcement can work together. It also highlights the need for adequately funded wildlife centers so rescued animals get a real chance at survival after release.
