12 EU countries push for more funding to accelerate the energy transition via Modernisation Fund extension
energiaestrategica.comTwelve European Union countries led by Poland have formed a coalition to demand that the European Commission extend and expand the Modernisation Fund beyond 2030. The fund is financed through EU ETS carbon allowance revenues and currently supports grid upgrades, storage, renewables, and electrification projects. Poland has received 53.5 billion zlotys from the fund since 2020 for energy efficiency and clean energy infrastructure. The coalition includes Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia. Their joint letter to Brussels argues that more resources are needed to maintain competitiveness during decarbonization. The fund's future will be decided during the upcoming EU ETS review in July 2026. Poland is also pushing for broader ETS reform to align climate policy with industrial competitiveness and technological progress.
